In order to strengthen family support systems for inmates, promote emotional connections, and enhance motivation for rehabilitation and reintegration, Miaoli Detention Center held the Lunar New Year Face-to-Face Family Reunion Visits on January 29 and 30, 2026 (ROC Year 115). A total of 75 inmates and 174 family members registered to participate, gathering together ahead of the holiday season in an atmosphere filled with warmth and festive spirit.
During the event, the Center specially invited calligraphy instructors Mr. Chen Bao-xu, Mr. Li Mu-liang, and Mr. Lai Ke-jun, who have long supported the Center’s calligraphy program, to write auspicious New Year blessings on site. These works were presented to inmates and their families as symbols of hope and good wishes for the coming year.In addition, the Center’s ocarina class performed songs such as “The Essence of Love” and “Happy New Year,” adding a joyful cultural touch and providing comfort and encouragement through music.
Superintendent Chiang Ching-lung also attended the event to extend greetings to family members. He expressed his appreciation, stating:“We are grateful that families continue to participate in these support activities. The companionship of loved ones is the greatest source of strength for inmates as they strive to reform and return to society.”Through face-to-face interaction and support, the event not only helped stabilize inmates’ emotions but also reinforced their determination to start anew.
One particularly moving moment involved an inmate named A-Hong, who entered the facility three months ago to serve a sentence of two years and two months for document forgery. He left behind a wife suffering from severe depression and a three-month-old daughter. During incarceration, he often worried about their well-being. When he saw his daughter at the reunion, her bright eyes gazing curiously at this unfamiliar yet familiar father, he became overwhelmed with emotion. Holding back tears, he tightly embraced his wife and child and whispered:“Daddy will change for the better. I will come home.”This heartfelt scene deeply touched everyone present, highlighting the vital role family support plays in correctional rehabilitation.
Furthermore, to care for families unable to attend in person, the Center had already held a Lunar New Year Telephone Reunion Program on January 27, enabling 633 families to convey love and blessings through phone calls. These voices of connection continued to strengthen family bonds despite physical distance.Miaoli Detention Center hopes that through this series of diverse family reunion and support initiatives, the power of kinship will help inmates stabilize emotionally, deepen their resolve to repent, and lay a solid foundation for successful reintegration into society.
