Behind the high walls and iron bars, the greatest distance is not physical space, but the longing for family. To build a bridge of affection between inmates and their families during the warm month of May, the Miaoli Detention Center launched a "Mother's Day Phone Visitation" on May 5, 2026. A total of 660 inmates expressed their gratitude to their mothers over the phone. This was followed by "Face-to-Face Visitation" and "Juvenile Detention House Visitation" on May 7 and 8, where 81 inmates and 158 family members crossed the distance to share touching moments within the facility.
At the event, the center prepared vibrant carnations for inmates to personally hand to the mothers who work tirelessly to protect their families. Many mothers moved to tears the moment they received the flowers. To help inmates reintegrate into society more smoothly, the center also arranged employment and anti-fraud counseling, hoping to strengthen their confidence in re-entering society through the empowerment of knowledge.
Chiang Ching-lung, Director of the Miaoli Detention Center, attended in person to offer care to the inmates and their families. He emotionally encouraged the inmates: "The waiting of your family is the most priceless support. I hope everyone cherishes this love, completes their time here soon, and does not disappoint the expectations of your mothers and families."
Among the many reunited figures, an inmate named "Ah-Cheng" (pseudonym), who entered the facility late last year, appeared particularly emotional. Ah-Cheng was imprisoned for a fraud case stemming from a momentary lapse into greed shortly after his daughter was born. Having missed his daughter’s growth, he previously could only accompany his child indirectly through voice and text via family support programs such as "Family Contact Books" and "Pillow Talk."
When Ah-Cheng finally held that familiar yet strange, warm little body today and heard his daughter babbling the word "Daddy," the once-lost father could no longer hold back his tears, hugging his daughter tightly and refusing to let go. This simple call has become Ah-Cheng's strongest internal motivation. He firmly stated that to avoid missing any more of his daughter's future, he will perform well to strive for an early return home to accompany his beloved daughter as she grows up.
The visitation event concluded successfully amidst mutual embraces and promises. Within the high walls, though physical bodies are restricted, inmates are finding the strength for rebirth step by step through the pull of family ties.
